The Best Vampire Movies Of All Time
The Lost Boys
Probably the best vampire movie of all time, The Lost Boys is a cult classic film from the eighties starring Kieffer Sutherland and the two Corey’s who were wildly popular at the time (being Corey Haim and Corey Feldman of course).
The Lost Boys is about two teen brothers, Sam and Michael who move to a small beach town in California with their recently divorced mother. They begin to notice the unusual amount of missing person flyers on the boardwalk and then eventually find out the town is teeming with vampires.
This black comedy horror directed by Joel Schumacher was filmed in Santa Cruz and spawned two sequels; Lost Boys: The Tribe and Lost Boys: The Thirst. The title of the movie is in reference to Peter Pan who like the vampires, never grow up.
The Lost Boys is often credited with being the first to bring a more youthful appeal to the vampire movie genre by making the vampires young and sexy which inspired other films in the same genre like Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Either way, you cannot call yourself a vampire movie aficionado unless you have seen this film.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Bram Stoker’s Dracula begins in 1462 with the tragic story of Vlad the Impaler who went off to fight the Crusades and returned to find that his beloved wife Elisabeta had killed herself.
Enraged, Dracula desecrates the chapel and renounces God declaring that he will rise from the grave to avenge Elisabeta with all the powers of darkness. He then stabs the chapel’s stone cross with his sword and drinks the blood that pours out of it.
Fast forward a couple hundred years, Dracula meets a solicitor whose fiancee looks strikingly like his deceased wife and believes it is her reincarnated.
Dracula is a great vampire film with a really good storyline directed by Francis Ford Coppola. If you haven’t seen it we guarantee that it will impress you.
Interview With The Vampire
Interview With A Vampire is a movie based on a well-liked book by Anne Rice of the same name and stars Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a very young
Kirsten Dunst. It is a gothic-horror film that chronicles the lives of vampires Lestat and Louis from the 1700’s up to the present told through an interview with a San Francisco reporter played by Christian Slater.
Nosferatu
Nosferatu is a silent black and white film from 1922 about a vampire named Count Orlok. The creepy count who lives in a remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains imprisons his real estate agent because of his lust for the young husbands wife.
This classic German horror film is an unauthorized adaptation of the original 1897 Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel, however details such as name changes were made to avoid copyright issues.
This film is considered a masterpiece for its time and you cannot claim to be a vampire movie buff if you haven’t seen it.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Buffy Summers was your average Christian Slater loving, high school cheerleader until she discovered she was a vampire slayer destined to save Los Angeles from thirsty bloodsuckers.
This comedy-horror from the early nineties starred Donald Sutherland, Kristy Swanson, Hilary Swank and Luke Perry from 90210 fame.
Even though the movie was not hugely successful upon release, it has slowly gathered a cult following over the years with lovers of vampire films. If this movie wasn’t on your radar before, make sure you stake it to your list.
Fright Night
Fright Night is a vampire film from the 1980’s that follows Charlie Brewster who discovers that his next door neighbor is a vampire. Charlie enlists the help of Peter Vincent, a TV show host who acted in several movies as a vampire hunter.
Even though this vampire movie is a little on the cheesey side it is still highly entertaining. A little more comedy than horror, this film became a cult classic and held a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Shadow Of The Vampire
Shadow of the Vampire (2000) is about a filmmaker struggling to re-create the classic silent film ‘Nosferatu’ on location in Eastern Europe. The director hires a real vampire on his quest to make the most authentic vampire movie ever. The film crew who have become suspicious of this eccentric actor are told that this actor is a method actor trained by Stanislavsky himself.
This vampire film is strange but very appealing. Willem Dafoe gives a spine-shivering performance from his body language to his disturbing smile. If you love the vampire movie genre and haven’t seen this one yet, be sure to add it to your list.
